Scope and Content General view of dining room from the west corner, Inveraray Castle, Argyll and Bute John, 5th Duke of Argyll, inherited the title in 1770, and began to transform the interior of Inveraray Castle in 1782 in accordance with fashionable taste. French influence can be seen in the tapestry, furniture and carpets installed in the 1780s. The doors in the dining room are light green with gilded ornamental features. The mouldings of the full-length panelled window shutters are also gilded. Much of the gilding in the rooms and of furniture was executed by a Frenchman, Leonard Dupasquier. The architect Robert Mylne (1733-1814) was responsible for much interior decoration of the castle. He made plans for the complete decoration of the south-west saloon and all the state rooms on the north-east side, including the dining room. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
