Scope and Content View of Tapestry Drawing Room in Inveraray Castle, Argyll and Bute John, 5th Duke of Argyll, inherited the title in 1770, and began to transform the interior of Inveraray Castle in 1782 in accordance with fashionable taste. French influence can be seen in the tapestry, furniture and carpets installed in the 1780s. Much of the furniture was made on site by a pair of Edinburgh cabinetmakers, Peter Traill and his son Douglas, working to French prototypes. However, the Beauvais tapestry chairs may have been bought in Paris. The architect Robert Mylne (1733-1814) was responsible for much interior decoration of the castle. He made plans for the complete decoration of the south-west saloon and all the state rooms on the north-east side, including the Tapestry Drawing Room. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
