Scope and Content View of saloon interior from the south, Inveraray Castle, Argyll and Bute John, 5th Duke of Argyll, inherited the title in 1770, and began to transform the interior of Inveraray Castle in 1782 in accordance with fashionable taste. The architect Robert Mylne (1733-1814) was responsible for much interior decoration of the castle. The saloon was the biggest room in the house and the only one to contain two fireplaces. The white marble chimneypieces date to the late 18th century and were brought to Inveraray from Rosneath Castle in 1952. The pilastered jambs support tall pedestals. The portrait on the end wall, flanked by the gilded girandoles, is of the 8th Duke of Hamilton, by Batoni. The angles of the room have gilt mouldings which form the lowest section of the cornice, composed of gilt swags draped over rosettes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
