Scope and Content Design for a house for the Duke of Argyll, Inveraray Castle, Argyll and Bute Archibald, 3rd Duke of Argyll, who succeeded to the title in 1743, was responsible for replacing the 15th-century Inveraray Castle with the present castle. He also initiated the removal of the town of Inveraray half a mile south to a new site. These designs for a house for the Duke of Argyll are attributed to Roger Morris (1695-1749), an English Palladian architect. The design is for a four-storeyed house with square corner pavilions and a central pedimented feature. Morris, who had also worked for the 2nd Duke of Argyll, did design a house for the 3rd Duke, but it was different from his usual designs and quite uncharacteristic of the times. Inveraray Castle is an early example of the Gothic Revival style. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
