Scope and Content St George's Church, Charlotte Square, Edinburgh Early 19th century drawing St George's Church, now West Register House, was built by Robert Reid, 1811-14, after Robert Adam's original design was rejected as being too costly. The church stands on the west side of the square, with a clear view along the length of George Street. Robert Reid's plan for the church shows an ionic portico and Corinthian colonnade. The enormous dome is a slimmer version of that of St Paul's Cathedral, London. The 'Scots Magazine' commented in 1814, when the church was opened 'It is certainly a pity that the Adam design was not used'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
