Scope and Content North side of Charlotte Square, Edinburgh Charlotte Square, designed by Robert Adam in 1791, the year before he died, is the crowning achievement of his many works of domestic architecture, and one of the most beautiful large residential squares in Europe. The splendid north side, the first to be built and the best preserved, is three storeys high and centred on a pediment mounted on four Corinthian columns. A prominent feature is the recessed and arched doors and windows at street level. In James Craig's plan for the New Town in 1767, the square is shown as St George's Square. The name was changed in 1786 to avoid confusion with George Square, completed in 1766 on the south side of the city. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
