Scope and Content North side of Charlotte Square, Edinburgh Charlotte Square, designed by Robert Adam in 1791, the year before he died, is the crowning achievement of his many works of domestic architecture, and one of the most beautiful large residential squares in Europe. The north side contains 11 houses behind a palace-front. At the centre is a large pediment supported on four columns, and from each side are two identical plainer wings, each terminated by a decorated pavilion surmounted by a sphinx. The first feu or plot in the square was taken in 1792, on the north side. By the early 19th century, Charlotte Square had become one of the most fashionable addresses in Edinburgh.
