Scope and Content St Andrew's Church (now St Andrew and St George), George Street, Edinburgh Detail of the interior St Andrew's Church was built in George Street in 1782-4 following the loss of its intended site in St Andrew Square. This shallow space suited the oval, or strictly elliptical, church of which this seems to be the first important example in Britain. The interior, described as 'one of the small masterpieces of 18th-century Edinburgh', has a flat oval plaster ceiling and frieze decorated with concentric ovals surrounded by garlands, similar to the style of Robert Adam. Robert Adam (1728-92), architect, born in Kirkcaldy, introduced an elegant Greek Classicism to interior as well as exterior design. His interiors' especially - the proportions of his rooms, the furniture, friezes and ceilings - are particularly elegant. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
