Scope and Content General view of private drawing-room in Inveraray Castle, Argyll and Bute John, 5th Duke of Argyll, inherited the title in 1770, and began to transform the interior of Inveraray Castle in 1782 in accordance with fashionable taste. French influence can be seen in the tapestry, furniture and carpets installed in the 1780s. This private drawing room was used by the 5th Duke, and was hung with tapestries until the 1950s. Above the moulded chair-rails, there are additional enriched timber fillets (flat bands) along the angles of the walls to frame the former tapestries. John Clayton executed the plasterwork of the ceiling between 1781 and 1782. Below the ceiling is a frieze decorated with birds and baskets of fruit among thin leaf-scrolls. Above the frieze is a cornice consisting of foliated medallions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
