Scope and Content Girandole or candleholder in saloon of Inveraray Castle, Argyll and Bute John, 5th Duke of Argyll, inherited the title in 1770, and began to transform the interior of Inveraray Castle in 1782 in accordance with fashionable taste. The architect Robert Mylne (1733-1814) was responsible for much interior decoration of the castle. In 1788-9 a set of four finely carved gilt wood girandoles were put up on the east and west walls, each pair on either side of a large portrait. The girandoles are in the shape of decorated lyres which are suspended from ribbons, intertwined with flowers. Within the topmost garland is a framed cartouche containing the ducal letter 'A'. The girandoles were designed by Mylne and gilded by Maitland Bogg, a gilder from Edinburgh who was paid £17 19s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
