Scope and Content View of saloon interior from the east, Inveraray Castle, Argyll and Bute John, 5th Duke of Argyll, inherited the title in 1770, and began to transform the interior of Inveraray Castle in 1782 in accordance with fashionable taste. The architect Robert Mylne (1733-1814) was responsible for much interior decoration of the castle. The saloon, formerly the main entrance-hall, has five doors, all of which were designed by Mylne. They are eight-panelled, painted and gilded, with moulded architraves. Until the 1950s the walls were hung with green damask, but are now painted. A visitor to the castle in 1784, Faujas de Saint-Fond, mentions they took breakfast 'in a large room, ornamented with historic pictures of the family' and in the room (saloon) there was also 'a billiard table, pianos and other musical instruments'.
