Scope and Content View of Inveraray Castle from the west, Argyll and Bute Inveraray Castle, a good example of early Gothic Revival style, was begun in 1745 to designs by the architect Roger Morris (1695-1749). The architect John Vanbrugh (1664-1726) and Dugald Campbell, a military engineer (d.1757), may have provided ideas. The front and rear elevations are seven-bayed with central entrances. The side elevations are five-bayed. The angle-towers have three windows and two slits in each of their four storeys. The 'new house' was taxed for 120 windows in 1762. In 1878-9 Anthony Salvin infilled the existing parapet to form an attic-storey of dormer windows, with separate pitched roofs on each side. He also added the conical roofs and Jacobean-style chimneys to the angle-towers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
