Scope and Content View of north-east front of Inveraray Castle, Argyll and Bute Inveraray Castle, a good example of early Gothic Revival style, was begun in 1745 to designs by the architect Roger Morris (1695-1749). The architect John Vanbrugh (1664-1726) and Dugald Campbell, a military engineer (d.1757), may have provided ideas. In this view of the north-east front, the bridge designed by Roger Morris can be seen, leading into the principal floor. The bridge crosses the fosse (moat), which is about 3.5m deep. The stone wall around the fosse is surmounted by an iron railing. The top windows of the angle-towers have their original intersecting glazing bars. Many of the windows in the principal and bedroom floors had new glazing bars inserted in the 1780s by Robert Mylne (1733-1814). There is a simulated window to the left.
