Scope and Content View of Inveraray Castle from the south-west, Argyll and Bute Inveraray Castle, a good example of early Gothic Revival style, was begun in 1745 to designs by the architect Roger Morris (1695-1749). The architect John Vanbrugh (1664-1726) and Dugald Campbell, a military engineer (d.1757), may have provided ideas. The south-west bridge over the fosse or moat leading to the Gothic doorway was once the main entrance to the castle, but now leads from the private garden into the saloon. The doorway leads to the principal floor above the basement. Above the principal floor are the bedroom and the attic storeys. This elevation is seven-bayed, each window having a hood-mould projecting from the wall to throw off the rain. The glazing bars were inserted in 1782-7. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
