Scope and Content Former motor car works, Heathhall, Dumfries, Dumfriesshire This factory was built by the Arrol-Johnston Motor Company in 1913, on the lines of contemporary American factories designed by Albert Kahn, with reinforced-concrete frames. The factory was extended in 1924, in similar style. This view shows the south elevation of the factory. The concrete frame, with brick and glass infill, is evident, as are the lift towers, which seem to have been designed for the possibility of adding a storey to the building. This was the most advanced light engineering factory of its day in Scotland. During the First World War it made aero-engines. It is now a rubber factory making, among other things, wellington boots.
