Scope and Content Townhead tollhouse, Langholm, Dumfriesshire This is one of a pair of tollhouses in Langholm, one at each end of the early 19th-century town. Both have a castellated semi-octagonal bay, as well as the piended roof and central chimney stack characteristic of many tollhouses of the period. This view shows the tollhouse from the north east. The building has a habitable basement, and has been extended to the left, in a sympathetic style. Tolls were abolished on Scottish roads and bridges by an Act of 1878 which, however took several years to implement. Many of the tollhouses were, however, good buildings, and remained in use as dwelling houses, as here. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
