Gretna, Tollhouse View from SE

SC 455143

Description Gretna, Tollhouse View from SE

Date 9/1975

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 455143

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Tollhouse, Gretna Green, Dumfriesshire This was built as a tollhouse on Thomas Telford's Carlisle to Glasgow road, and with its central bow was typical of the tollhouses on the route. It was one of the buildings in Gretna Green in which eloping couples were married. This view shows the building adapted as a tourist attraction, with the right-hand wing altered and extended. Claimed to be The First House in Scotland, and to have the Marriage Room in which without benefit of clergy couples could be married under Scots law by declaration.
