Scope and Content Jubilee suspension footbridge, Blacketlees, near Annan, Dumfriesshire This bridge was built to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria, and was designed and made by P and R Fleming, Glasgow. It is an economically constructed structure, with tubular steel pylon, wire-rope suspension cables, and a wooden deck. This view shows the bridge from the north west. Its slight construction is evident. The suspender rods are steel. And also serve to support the light wire-mesh railing. Flemings were notable manufacturers of sgricultural buildings and of metal fencing. This is the only surviving bridge by them in Scotland, but they may have exported others. There was a fairly extensive export trade in suspension bridges from Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
