Scope and Content Windmill stump, Ballantrae, Ayrshire This is the stump of a vaulted tower windmill, consisting of a cylindrical rubble tower with a vaulted chamber running out from the base of the tower. The vault served as an access to the mill, and also for storage. This view shows the vault from an angle, with the tower above. The vault has lost its dressed outer face, and the top has fallen in. The vault was subsequently filled in to avoid risk to livestock. This type of windmill was popular in Scotland in the late 17th century, examples being found from Moray to the Mull of Galloway, many examples, including this one, having very similar dimensions. All seem to have been corn mills. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
