Scope and Content Gourock Ropeworks, Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire The Gourock Ropework Co, founded in Gourock, moved here in 1797, at first making ropes only, but diversifying into canvas and netmaking. The firm took over Richardson's sugar refinery in 1868. This view shows the former sugar refinery building, which is of fireproof construction, with brick-arches between cast iron beams, supported on cast iron columns. All the factory buildings on this site have been demolished apart from the former sugar refinery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
