Scope and Content Gourock Ropeworks, Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire The Gourock Ropework Co, founded in Gourock, moved here in 1797, at first making ropes only, but diversifying into canvas and netmaking. The firm took over Richardson's sugar refinery in 1868. This view shows the works from the east end, with single-storey workshops in the foreground. Behind the chimney is the brick house for the beam engine that powered the works. The brick building on the right was Richardson's sugar refinery. All the factory buildings on this site have been demolished apart from the former sugar refinery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
