Scope and Content Burntisland Harbour, Fife This harbour has a complex history. It was improved in 1870-81 by the construction of a wet dock, with an associated sea wall, and was again enlarged in 1902. These improvements were undertaken by the North British Railway for coal export. This view shows the wet dock opened in 1902, with two dumb barges used to bring bauxite (aluminium ore) ashore from bulk carriers too large to use the harbour. The barges are discharged by the cranes seen here into road vehicles. The bauxite trade is now the mainstay of the harbour. The mineral is destined for the British Alcan alumina plant nearby, which refines the bauxite into high-purity alumina to be used in aluminium smelters. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
