Scope and Content North Bridge of Edinburgh, looking east from the drained Nor' Loch In 1769 the building of a North Bridge between the Old Town across the valley of the Nor' Loch allowed vital access to the city's newly acquired land to the north, and the construction of the New Town could begin. This view shows the Old Town to the south, William Mylne's three-arched North Bridge, and Princes Street, the south-facing street of James Craig's New Town, completed as far as Frederick Street. One improvement initiated by the then Lord Provost of Edinburgh, George Drummond, was the draining of the Nor' Loch, which had become a fetid dump for rubbish. The gardens which replaced it were originally for the private use of Princes Street residents. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
