Scope and Content 18th-century map of Edinburgh In 1752 a series of 'Proposals', initiated by the then Lord Provost George Drummond, suggested improvements to the city, including the construction of a merchants' exchange, a public record office and the building of a New Town to the north. This map of the city shows James Craig's gridiron street plan for the New Town - three parallel streets with a square at each end - and his plan, which was never adopted, to turn the Nor' Loch into a canal, with walks and terraces on each side. In 1766 Edinburgh Town Council launched a competition for a New Town plan, and from the six entries submitted, chose that of the young Scottish architect James Craig (1744-95) whose reward was a gold medal and the freedom of the burgh.
