Scope and Content View of staircase, Manor House, No 17 Boswall Road, Edinburgh Manor House, built c.1830 is the central section of three linked villas. The architect was possibly Thomas Hamilton (1784-1858). Linking pavilions were added c.1851. Conversion into 12 flats began in 1965, by Broadland Properties, but was not completed. This photograph shows the curving staircase in the hall of the villa with its cast iron balustrade and sweeping wooden banister. Victorian coloured tiles form a geometric design on the floor. Plasterwork cornices decorate the walls and below the stairs. Geometric tiles were very popular in Victorian tiles for hallways, as they allowed a colourful design to be created which wore well in this heavily used area of the house. Encaustic tiles, with inlaid-clay patterns were also used, but were more expensive. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
