Scope and Content Union Bridge, Aberdeen The Union Bridge and its approaches gave Aberdeen a new central thoroughfare, and what has become its principal street. The bridge was designed by Thomas Fletcher, and the approaches by David Hamilton and Charles Abercrombie. This view shows the bridge from the north The original masonry span can be seen behind the later steel addition. The bridge was widened in 1905-8 and again in 1964. Since 1974 a relief road has been driven along the Denburn valley, parallel to the railway line, and development has taken place on the south side of the bridge, further obscuring it.
