Scope and Content Etna Brickworks, Bathville, by Armadale, West Lothian This was one of the largest common brickworks in Scotland, making stiff-clay bricks from blaes from the coal measures. There were four Hoffman continuous kilns here, two of c.1897, with rounded ends and central chimneys. This view shows the western c.1897 kiln with fired bricks being removed on handcarts and stacked manually. The two oldest kilns were out of use by the mid 1980s, and have since been demolished. The two remaining Hoffman kilns were adapted for palletised charging and discharging, and a shuttle kiln was added. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
