Scope and Content Etna Brickworks, Bathville, by Armadale, West Lothian This was one of the largest common brickworks in Scotland, making stiff-clay bricks from blaes from the coal measures. There were four Hoffman continuous kilns here, two of c1897, with rounded ends and central chimneys. This view shows the eastern c1897 kiln with its roof and chimney. These kilns were the only survivors of their type in Scotland. The two oldest kilns were out of use by the mid 1980s, and have since been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
