Scope and Content Philiphaugh Mill, Selkirk, Selkirkshire This complex was founded I 1876, and was an integrated tweed mill, with mules, probably driven by a water power, in a single-storey range. An auxiliary steam engine was installed in 1912, and two direct-drive water turbines in 1922. This view shows the larger of the two low-head turbines installed in 1922, and built by John Macdonald & Co, Glasgow. The drive to the mill was by the vertical shaft to the right of the ladder in this view. Direct drive water turbines were not common in Scotland, and this was one of the last to operate. The mill has closed since 1975. The steam engine is now at New Lanark. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
