Scope and Content Number One Mill, New Lanark, Lanarkshire New Lanark was founded as a cotton-spinning complex by David Dale, a Glasgow linen merchant and banker, in 1784. This mill was the first to be constructed, but had to be rebuilt after a fire. The top two storeys were removed c.1945. This view shows the mill when the mill area was owned by Metal Extractions Ltd, a metal-recycling concern who allowed scrap and rubbish to accumulate al over the area, as seen here. The mills are now in the ownership of The New Lanark Conservation Trust, and this mill has had its top storeys and pitched roof restored and has been converted into a training hotel.
