Scope and Content Queen Street Station, Glasgow This station was opened in 1842 by the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway, and rebuilt in 1878-80 by the North British Railway, engineer James Carsewell. The station was widened and lengthened, opening at the north end. This view shows the north end of the station, with the retaining wall of 1878-80 on the right, and the bridge carrying Cathedral Street over the station, with ironwork by Smith and Naysmith, 1879. The train shown is for Edinburgh. A ver large shopping centre has been built above the retaining wall shown here since the mid 1990s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
