Scope and Content Carronbridge Viaduct, Dumfriesshire This six-span viaduct was built for the Glasgow, Dumfries and Carlisle Railway and opened in 1850. The engineer was John Miller. This view shows the location of the viaduct in the wooded gorge of the Carron water. The original low parapet has been heightened in brick, with a steel handrail. This viaduct is one of a series on the Glasgow, Dumfries and Carlisle line, all in the same style, and arguably the finest series of 'Railway Mania' viaducts in Britain.
