Description Charlestown, Limekilns Detail of drawhole in W range

Date 5/10/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 451832

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Limekilns, Charlestown, Fife This is the largest group of kilns in Scotland -14 in all - built by successive earls of Elgin. Initially the lime was shipped from the adjacent harbour, and coal probably came in the same way. In the early 19th century the Elgin Railway was built. This view shows the front draw arch of one of the more recent kilns. The stones in the foreground were brought in as part of the construction of a new road along the front of the kilns to give access to new houses. The Elgin Railway brought coal for the kilns - and for shipment from the harbour - from Dunfermline. Later the North British Railway built a branch line to the harbour.
