Scope and Content Avon Viaduct, Linlithgow, West Lothian The Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway was the first really well engineered line north of the Border, with easy gradients and sweeping curves, achieved by heavy earthworks, long viaducts and tunnels. This view shows the viaduct from the south east. It is a 23-span structure, with 20 main segmental spans. The arches were originally hollow, with the track carried on longitudinal internal walls, but the voids have been filled with lightweight concrete. The Edinburgh & Glasgow is one of the least altered of the early main lines in Britain, though almost all the original station buildings have gone. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
