Scope and Content Lifting bridge over Union Canal, Leamington Basin, Gilmore Park, Edinburgh This electrically-operated lifting bridge was originally located at Port Hopetoun, the original Edinburgh terminus of the canal. This section was filled in between the wars, and the bridge moved here. This view shows the bridge from the north. The moving span slides up the steel frames, with a hoisting mechanism and control cabin on the right, where there was also a footbridge for use when the span was lifted. The bridge had been disused for many years when this photograph was taken. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
