Scope and Content Aqueduct over B7030 road, Union Canal, Clifton Hall/ Ratho Midlothian This canal was designed by Hugh Baird to link Edinburgh to the Forth & Clyde Canal at Camelon. It was a barge canal, so the overbridges were fixed. This is typical of the minor aqueducts on the route. This view shows that the aqueduct is substantially constructed of sandstone ashlar. This emphasis on quality is a characteristic of the canal works as a whole. The canal had a short life as an important means of transport, as it was to a large extent superseded by the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway, opened in 1842. The railway company bought the canal in 1847.
