Scope and Content Keir Mill, Dumfriesshire This mill, on a rectangular plan, had a 3-storey main range, with a two-storey granary and kiln at one end. By 1974all the machinery, including the wheel, had been removed, except for most of the wooden pit wheel, a rare survival. This view shows the remains of the wooden pit wheel, which was mounted on the axle of the waterwheel, and drove the vertical shaft(s) of the millstones. The sockets round the rim were for wooden teeth. This was a typical rural corn mill. Like many such, it has now been converted into a house. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
