New Abbey, Monksmill View from ESE

SC 450297

Description New Abbey, Monksmill View from ESE

Date 28/8/1978

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 450297

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content New Abbey Mill, Kirkcudbrightshire This mill, formerly known as Monksmill, is probably on the site of the monastic mill for New Abbey. In its present form it is unorthodox, having the wheel on the side, rather than on a gable, and having the miller's house attached to the mill. This view shows the mill from the road. The mill proper is on the left, with the kiln in the middle (lean-to in front) and the miller's house on the right. The mill was restored in the 1970s, and is now in the care of Historic Scotland. It has three pairs of stones, driven by a pitch-back wheel, 1.52 by 4.42m, with a wooden axle. The two pairs of oatmeal stones were installed in 1851. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
