Dumbarton East Station General view from N showing island platform building

SC 450087

Description Dumbarton East Station General view from N showing island platform building

Date 9/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 450087

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Dumbarton East Station, Dunbartonshire This island-platform station, with access from below a bridge, was built by the Lanarkshire & Dumbartonshire Railway, and had that line's characteristic steel-framed awnings and brick and timber buildings. This view shows the platform building from the north west. The steel frame of the awnings is clearly expressed. The Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire was built by the Caledonian Railway to give that company access to the Balloch and Dumbarton traffic of the North British Railway, so the stations were designed to be more attractive than those of the rival concern.
