Old Bridge of Dee View from SSE

SC 449921

Description Old Bridge of Dee View from SSE

Date 28/8/1978

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 449921

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Old Bridge of Dee, Kirkcudbrightshire This is a 4-span masonry bridge, with the semicircular arches and massive piers with triangular cutwaters characteristic of the period. It carried the main east-west road through Galloway until Threave Bridge was built in 1825. This view shows the massive construction of this rubble-built bridge, and the narrowness of its carriageway. Though bypassed for 175 years, the bridge still carries local traffic.
