Scope and Content Angel Hotel, Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbrightshire This three-storey building, with its prominent Venetian windows, was built as a coaching inn when Gatehouse was on the main road from Carlisle to Portpatrick, an important route to Ireland. There was extensive stabling in a detached block. This view shows the hotel, with its low-pitched roof, at the end of the main street. The end of the stable block is on the right. This inn presumably also served the nearby cotton mills, and its proximity to them may account for the elaborate treatment of the principal front of the building.
