Scope and Content St Mary's Church, Auchindoir, Aberdeenshire St Mary's is a rectangular church in the late Romanesque style known as Transitional and probably dates to around 1200. Remodelled in the early 16th century, it was used until 1811 when a new church was built, and its roof and woodwork were sold. This panel bears the initials, in relief, of the parson responsible for the 16th century alterations. He was probably Master Alexander Strachan. The incised inscription and date below were added in 1658. The typical plan-form for Scottish parish churches - a narrow rectangle with low walls and one roof running from the east to the west gable - was laid in the 13th century and was used for the next 600 years. St Mary's is a good example of this plan-form. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
