Date 14/8/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 445968

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content St Devenick's Bridge, Cults, Aberdeenshire This early suspension bridge was designed by John Smith, and has iron-rod chains of the type used by Captain Samuel Brown in his early bridges. The deck and cross-pattern parapets are wooden, and the Doric pylons are made of cast iron. This view shows the bridge from the north west. The abutment at the south end had been washed away, and the bridge was accordingly disused. By the time this bridge was built, Samuel Brown's patent for chain design had run out, so Smith was able to use the system without involving Brown. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
