Scope and Content Turnhouse Airfield, Edinburgh Luftwaffe aerial photograph of Turnhouse airfield, taken during World War II. On the date of photography, this small grass airfield was home to Spitfires of No 603 Squadron, jointly credited with No 602 Squadron of destroying the first enemy aircraft over Britain during World War II. Edinburgh Airport now lies to the west. The German Luftwaffe took aerial photographs of parts of Scotland throughout World War II. The photographs were used for intelligence work, such as selecting targets, assessing bombing accuracy and finding equipment and defensive positions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
