Description Freuchie, Eden Valley Linen Mill View of chimney and rear of works, from W

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 444532

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Jute mill, Freuchie, Fife This was an outpost of the much larger jute industry of Dundee and district. It was probably, however, built as a linen weaving factory, taking up jute weaving to provide backing for linoleum manufactured in the nearby burgh of Falkland.. This view shows the mill chimney. The proportions of the chimney and its octagonal cross-section suggest a date in the 1860s or 70s. The towns and villages of north east Fife were all involved to some extent in the growth of the linen industry in the 18th century, and this was probably the key to 19th century factory development.
