Freuchie, Eden Valley Linen Mill View from SE of frontage

SC 444530

Description Freuchie, Eden Valley Linen Mill View from SE of frontage

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 444530

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Jute mill, Freuchie, Fife This was an outpost of the much larger jute industry of Dundee and district. It was probably, however, built as a linen weaving factory, and took to weaving jute cloth as a backing for the linoleum industry in the nearby village of Falkland This view shows the front range of the mill, which housed the offices and warehouse. There were single-storey weaving sheds behind. The towns and villages of north east Fife were all involved to some extent in the growth of the linen industry in the 18th century, and this was probably the key to 19th century factory development.
