Robroyston Colliery, Separator Tower and Bunkers View from W

SC 444479

Description Robroyston Colliery, Separator Tower and Bunkers View from W

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 444479

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Remains of Robroyston Colliery, Lanarkshire This colliery was sunk in connection with Clyde Ironworks, but was latterly owned by John Watson Ltd. After it closed in 1932 a brickworks continued to operate on the site until the 1960s. The remains extant in 1974 were probably of the 1920s. This view shows the site after it had been substantially cleared. The remaining structures probably relate to a coal washery, with the concrete bins on the right for different qualities of washed coal, and the tower a settling tank for fine particles. These structures probably survived the demise of coal mining here because they were difficult to demolish and had no scrap value. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
