Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Old Bridge of Keith, Banffshire This is a small single-span humpbacked rubble bridge, with an almost semicircular arch. The bridge has steps up to the hump, but was probably built for pack-horse traffic. Wheeled vehicles were rare in this area until the late 18th century. This view shows the bridge from the south end, with the splayed approach at that end. The rubble construction is clearly visible, as are the steps up to the summit of the hump. Bridges as old as this are rare in this part of Scotland. Many were swept away in the catastrophic floods of 1829. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
