Scope and Content Concrete replica of St John's Cross, Iona, Argyll and Bute Wooden crosses were used in the time of Columba, founder of the monastery on Iona in 563 AD. By the 8th century the monastery had become an important artistic centre with wealthy patrons, and the likely home of The Book of Kells. By the mid-8th century, free-standing high crosses in stone were being produced. St John's Cross, originally ringless, is decorated with panels of snake-and-boss designs and 'birds' nest' bosses and spiral work similar to that found in the Book of Kells. The cross probably fell shortly after being erected. The problem was the great span (2.2m) and weight of its arms. The ring was added to improve the balance. A concrete replica now stands close to the traditional site of Columba's burial. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
