Scope and Content James Craig's 'Plan of the new streets and squares intended for the City of Edinburgh, 1767' In 1766 Edinburgh Town Council launched a competition for a plan for a New Town, and from the six entries submitted, chose that of the young architect, James Craig, son of an Edinburgh merchant. This plan, dedicated to King George III, shows Craig's design for the New Town - three principal parallel streets with a square at each end - and his plan, which was never adopted, to turn the Nor' Loch into a canal, with walks and terraces on each side. The winning element of this plan was that the two outer streets, Princes Street and Queen Street, were built up on only one side; houses in Queen Street would look towards the River Forth, and those in Princes Street would look to the Castle and Old Town.
